In the early 16th century, Juan Ponce de Leon, a famous Spanish explorer, discovered Key West or as what it was known back then: Cayo Hueso or “Isle of Bones” from the grim remnants of what might either have been an Indian burial site or a battlefield. There are competing theories as to how the name Key West came to be but it is widely accepted that it was a product of false-friend Anglicization of the original Cayo Hueso.

The “West” in Key West may also describe its position as the westernmost of the Keys with a sustainable supply of fresh water. This unique position is also where the southernmost point in Continental United States can be found.

With its distinct geography and rich cultural history, Key West offers a diverse selection of facilities and activities to impart that deep thrill of discovery upon its visitors.

Intellectual pursuits are, of course, but a part of what Key West can offer to visitors. Diving and snorkeling sites are simply abundant in its surrounding oceans. Explore the Ten-Fathom Ledge – sanctuary for lobsters and groupers – or The Cayman Salvor – a 180-pound steel buoy tender intentionally sunk in 1985.

There are also many fishing and boating service providers in Key West. As what can be expected from this island paradise, plentiful gamefish roam the waters in and around Key West, ready to give anglers a challenging bout.
